metta circles · how it works

How a circle comes together.

Seven people, three weekly calls — woven by an agent that then gets out of the way.

the unit

Your seven.

Each starling tracks only the seven nearest birds. From that small, local attention, the whole murmuration moves as one.— what a circle is built on

A circle is your seven — a handful of people held close enough to truly attend to. Not a feed. Not an audience. The number isn’t arbitrary: depth has a scale, and beyond it, presence thins. You don’t see the whole flock. You see the few beside you, and you move with them. That’s the entire design.

what this is

Deep talk.

Small-group conversation that starts with what’s alive in you — not small talk, not debate. Each week a contemplative prompt opens the space. You share from experience, not opinion. The rest unfolds.

This is

  • Strangers who become kin.
  • Listening without fixing.
  • Three weekly calls, same people.
  • Held by a volunteer who trusts the group.

This is not

  • Therapy or a support group.
  • A cure for loneliness.
  • Networking or social expansion.
  • Self-help or optimization.
how it works

From reflection to circle.

1

You share what’s alive

A few honest reflections about what you’re holding and how you meet difficulty.

2

The Circle Agent notices resonance

It surfaces questions that rhyme and experiences that might speak to each other — then proposes your seven. And then it disappears.

3

The circle gathers — three times

Same people, same anchor, three weekly calls. Trust deepens, kinship forms, and whatever wants to continue is yours.

the engine

An ancient circle, woven by a modern agent.

An Awakin Circle is a thirty-year-old practice — silence, sharing, kinship — now carried by the Circle Agent: the AI that finds your seven, tends the logistics, and then gets out of the way.

Pairing seven from a thousand is a 194-quadrillion-combination problem, and each circle takes roughly 48 small coordination touchpoints across three weeks. The agent quietly does both, then steps aside — so in a recent pilot, several circles found the matching resonant enough to keep meeting on their own.

My new favorite thing about AI is that it brought me into this circle.— a pilot participant

Under the hood it isn’t matching on demographics or time zones. It builds a living relationship graph — an ontology of who has truly met whom, which questions rhyme, where separate communities secretly bridge — and reasons over it five ways:

Resonance
people who deeply met each other’s words.
Edge
respectful difference, real engagement.
Serendipity
connections no one noticed.
Alumni
shared history across many pods.
Bridge
people who link separate communities.

Then it gets out of the way — the way a good host vanishes once the guests are talking. More on the philosophy of an AI that disappears, and on how your words are handled in How Your Reflections Are Held.

When a few movements align, a larger pattern takes flight. ← back to Metta Circles
